On the 25th of April 1974, Portugal changed forever!
After 48 years of dictatorship under the “Estado Novo” regime, the 🌹 Carnation Revolution (“Revolução dos Cravos”) began with a song on the radio – a signal for the military to take action. But this was no ordinary coup: it was almost entirely peaceful. Civilians poured into the streets and a simple woman, Celeste Caeiro, innocently placed a red carnation inside a soldier’s gun barrel. The others followed and this act gave name to a revolution where not a single shot was fired.
April 25, 1974, wasn’t just the end of a dictatorship — it was the beginning of a new society in Portugal. For women, it was the start of a long-overdue transformation: before April 25, they couldn’t vote freely, needed their husband’s permission to work, and had little protection under the law. But after the revolution, everything began to change!
The 🌹 Carnation Revolution brought freedom, but also real and lasting social change:
Free speech & free press – Censorship ended and the voices that were once silenced, were finally heard. 🗣️📰
Universal education – Schools opened to all and illiteracy declined rapidly. 📚
Public healthcare – Access to healthcare became a right, not a privilege. 🏥
Workers’ rights – Minimum wage laws, unions and labor protections were established. ⚖️
Housing and social support – Major steps were taken to improve living conditions and reduce inequality. đźŹ
Democracy for all – Everyone gained the right to vote, regardless of the gender or social status. 🗳️
The 🌹 Carnation Revolution was a peaceful uprising — but its impact was powerful and deep. It transformed Portugal into a free, fairer, and more compassionate country.
Every year we celebrate, not just the fall of a regime, but the rise of rights, dignity, and opportunity for all. 🌹
“25 de abril, sempre!”
